Thinking Differently About Teaching

English

I am interested in how we can think differently about how we teach autistic students. I want to focus on the strengths of our students and use technology to empower them.

Some of the most important ways we teach autistic students — through visual supports, with executive functioning guidance — continue to evolve as technologies develop and expand.

Technology as a Bridge

English

This is how I think technology can support gaps in our learning environments: if our children are in classrooms that are not always catering to their specific needs, it may be that technology can help with inclusive outcomes.

Strengths & Interests
Enter a student's interest and the topic being taught in class. The tool provides ten ways to authentically integrate the student's interest into the curriculum — tap any idea for further lesson guidance.

Executive Functioning Task Analyser
Executive functioning can be one of the hardest things to plan for, but it makes a big difference for student success. This tool analyses a classroom task and provides practical guidance across key executive functioning domains to support lesson design.

Reflective Lens
Useful for when you are 'feeling stuck' with a student. Enter the current situation and the tool generates neurodiversity-affirming questions — from the student's perspective — to help you plan what to do next.

Floating Thoughts
Helps break big tasks into smaller, manageable chunks. Students describe a project they need to complete (or upload it) and the tool splits it into steps they can organise in whatever order makes sense to them.
For Students ·
Student Multi-Tool
Students can use this tool to: understand how to complete a school task; have a concept explained to them in a simpler way; understand a social situation that may be confusing or uncertain.

Pathway
Helps students understand how they are feeling, and gives them strategies to feel something different. Students type in how they are feeling now and how they want to feel — the tool then provides four self-regulation strategies.

English

AI is no longer just about text conversations. We are entering an era where AI tools can interact with the physical world around us — seeing, analysing, and responding to real-world situations in real time.

This opens up entirely new possibilities for supporting students in the classroom and beyond.

Problem Solving

Cardboard conveyor belt project
I was trying to build a conveyor belt from cardboard, for a project, with only a few resources available. I couldn't get it to work. Then, I pointed an AI tool at what I had built, told it the resources I had available — and it helped me finish the project successfully.

This is the potential of AI as a real-world problem-solving partner: not just answering questions, but helping us create.

Creating Activities

Classroom game built from available resources
I was in a classroom where we didn't have all the resources needed to play a game. Using an AI tool, I took a photo of the resources we had available. The tool created a new game for us using only those resources. The students then added their own ideas — creating a game they all loved playing together.

Creativity and problem-solving, powered by AI — and owned by the students.

Venn diagram showing Biodiversity, Technodiversity and Neurodiversity
English

We best support our students when we recognise the diversity of each of them and provide technologies that are diverse and allow for personalisation unique to the needs of every individual student.

Just as biodiversity strengthens ecosystems, neurodiversity enriches our classrooms. Tools should bend and adapt to the student — not the other way around.
